STAFF & STUDENT ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY FOR INFORMATION RETRIEVAL SYSTEMS |

Southeast of Saline, U.S.D. #306, is working to provide access to information retrieval systems for all students, faculty, and staff. Information retrieval systems is a term which includes all existing technologies related to computers and the Internet, as well as terms to be developed in the future relating to this technology. For the purpose of this policy, computer systems include the Internet, which is being made available for student, faculty and staff use at Southeast of Saline. Students must have permission from at least one of their parents or guardians to access these information retrieval systems. Activities while using an information retrieval system in the school must be in support of education and research and consistent with the curriculum of the U.S.D. #306 School system. In addition, anyone accessing an information retrieval system from a school site is responsible for all online activities entered into by such person. The use of information retrieval systems is a privilege, not a right. Southeast of Saline declares unethical and unacceptable behavior as just cause for taking disciplinary action, revoking information retrieval access privileges, and/or initiating legal action for any activity initiated from school or any other site through which an individual: Uses impolite, abusive or otherwise objectionable language in either public or private messages; Uses information retrieval systems for illegal, inappropriate or obscene purposes or in support of such activities. Illegal activities shall be defined as those that violate local, state, and/or federal laws. Inappropriate use shall be defined as a violation of the intended use of the information retrieval systems and/or purpose and goal. Obscene activities shall be defined as a violation of generally accepted social standards for use of a publicly owned and operated communication vehicle;Uses the information networks for any illegal activity, including violation of copyrights or other contracts violating such matters as institutional or third party copyright, license agreements and other contracts. Examples of unacceptable usage:
Anyone accused of any of the violations has all of the rights that would normally apply if such person were accused of school vandalism or any other illegal activity.
Students and staff shall have no expectation of privacy for any information created, stored or used on any district computer system. Southeast of Saline makes no guarantee that the functions or the services provided by or through the district information retrieval systems will be error-free or without defect.
