GREAT START!

Thank you to students, teachers and families for a great start to the school year!  We are approaching the mid-year break soon and we all know how quickly time will fly by after the holidays!

A couple of exciting initiatives we've begun this year at SES Elementary are:

1.  Transitioning to the Common Core State Standards

(go to www.commoncore.org for more info)

2.  Implementation of a benchmark program for K-6 in Math and Reading

3.  An iPad Pilot Group for Teachers

4.  Implementation of a program called MTSS, or Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports

(go to www.kansasmtss.org for more info)

We are very excited about these new programs and what it will mean for students in USD 306!  I sincerely appreciate our wonderful staff as they have embraced these with great attitudes and positive energy!

As always, if you ever have questions, please do not hesitate to ask!

BACK TO SCHOOL!

It's almost time to begin another school year!  Please welcome a few new faces to our Elementary Staff!

Mr. Rex Cearley will be our new K-8 Counselor.  Previously, he worked as the Middle School Counselor in Abilene, KS.

Mrs. Sara Hammel will be joining our Third Grade Staff.  She comes to us from the Holcolm School District in which she was also a Third Grade Teacher!

Mr. Ky Swisher joins our Administrative Team and will be serving as our K-12 Assistant Principal.  Some of you probably know Mr. Swisher as he has been our High School Social Studies Teacher for several years at SES!

Let's give them a big SES Welcome!

See you at ENROLLMENT ON AUG. 2!

WINDING THE YEAR DOWN!

Whew!  Hold on because this last month of school will fly by!  We will celebrate the conclusion of another terrific school year!

Please mark your calendar for May 9.  We will be honoring Mr. Ray Everhart, our School Counselor, for his commitment to our district as he retires at the end of this school year.  We will be hosting a come-and-go reception from 3:30-5:30 in the HS Commons!

Thanks to the many parents that helped us with the iRock celebration for grades 3 - 6.  The students appeared to really enjoy the day and it's always a nice way to wrap up the state assessment season!

Parent Teacher Conferences

Next week, we will be conducting Parent-Teacher Conferences!  This is a wonderful opportunity for parents and teachers to share specific information with one another about each child.

Good questions for parents to ask teachers during conferences:

1.  What are my child's strengths?

2.  If you could choose one area for my child to improve on, which would it be?

3.  What kind of progress has my child made since the beginning of the year?

4.  How does my child relate to his/her peers?

5.  How are my child's organizational skills?

6.  How can I support my child best?

Parents know their children best!  Asking for specific ideas from the teacher is appreciated and encouraged by our staff!

We look forward to seeing you!

First Semester Comes to an End

It's so hard to believe we'll be ringing in the new year soon! Our students and staff have been busy with holiday projects, concerts and finalizing assessments for the conclusion of the first semester.

On behalf of our elementary staff, I would like to wish you safe travels and good health during the holiday break!

We'll see you back on Jan. 4th, 2012!

WINTER IS APPROACHING!

The cold, wet weather quickly reminds us that the winter season is knocking at our door!  It's also a good time to find hats, gloves and scarves for your child.  Many of our kids wait for the bus before school and it's important that they are dressed appropriately.  Most days we also head outdoors for recess to provide a few minutes of fresh air so please provide warm clothing as needed.

Thanks for all the wonderful donations for our Fun Night as this is the biggest fundraiser for our Elementary Parent's Club!  With this money, the Club is able to provide a yearbook for each child, a free book at each RIF (reading activity), a fieldtrip opportunity in April/May and much more!  We appreciate all the folks who have volunteered to help that evening as well!

Again, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact our school staff.

OCTOBER UPDATE!

We had an outstanding turnout for parent teacher conferences!  Thanks to all the parents who made the commitment to attend their child's conference and meet with our staff.  Our staff understands the importance of working with parents to create the best school experience as possible for our students.

The first nine weeks will end this Friday, Oct. 14.  Students will not have school on Oct. 17 as our staff will be busy finalizing progress reports and meeting with colleagues to work on various curricular topics.

Next week (beginning Oct. 17) also marks BUS DRIVER APPRECIATION WEEK so if you have time, be sure and thank your child's bus driver for safely transporting your child to and from school each day!

HAPPY OCTOBER!   Class Pic...
