12-14-11
Parents of junior high scholars:

The junior high scholars’ bowl introductory meeting will be Wednesday, Dec. 14 in the typing lab.  Scholars’ bowl involves live academic competition with students from area schools.  Teams of four (or sometimes five) try to “buzz in” and answer questions before their opponents can “buzz in.”
We’ll practice once a week during seminar (The location is yet to be determined.) from January until the middle of March, usually on Tuesdays at 2:30.  Our first practice will be Tuesday, Jan. 10.
We currently have five meets scheduled (listed below).   Most meets start at 4:00 and finish between 5:30 and 6:30. Ours starts at 3:50 and concludes by 6:10.
Because we often have many participants in Junior High Scholars’ Bowl, players will be assigned to contests and will not participate in all of them.  The home meet is an exception.  It will require extra help from parents and staff because all participants will either play or help to run the home meet. Parents and staff, thanks in advance.

Tentative Meet Schedule

Monday, Jan. 30 Tescott (4:00 start; 2:45 dismissal) Mrs. Spencer and Mr. Mac driving

What participants can expect
Practices:
1.     Practices will be held weekly on Tuesdays during seminar at 2:30.  Attendance is required for those who desire to participate.  Students who plan to miss a practice should contact me in advance – in person, by e-mail (gmcclure@usd306.com), via EdModo, or by phone (home: 785-667-4586 or school: 785-536-4286.).
2.     Practices should be fun and beneficial for all of us.  Laughter is good; clowning, disrupting, and repeated buzzer testing are not.
Tournaments:
3.     We’ll often eat at a restaurant after tournaments.  Participants should bring money for food if they’re scheduled to go to a tournament. (Only 10-12 can participate at each tournament.)
4.     Regular school attire is appropriate for tournaments.
5.     Parents are welcome at tournaments.  We like to take vans rather than buses, so parents are encouraged to volunteer to help transport students.  Already I see a major need for help Thursday, Feb. 23.  I’ll be with high school journalists, so I’ll need two parent sponsors.
6.     If you’d like more detail, see http://sites.google.com/site/gamcclure/home/jh-scholars-bowl.
7.     If you’d like to get email or text message alerts about scholars’ bowl, you may join our EdModo SES JH Scholars group (as a student), at EdModo.com. Our access code is sa2ml9

Mini Bio

Mr. Mac's Mini Biography

After sinking roots in Saline County over 25 yeas ago, I continue to learn to bloom where I've been planted. My 22 years of teaching junior highstudents are now a dim memory as I have been teaching concurrent credit college composition and literature, sophomore English, and journalism for the past seven years. Both my undergraduate and master's degrees in English are from Fort Hays State University.
My wife Melony teaches junior high and high school math at SES. Our son Mark, after graduating from KSU in chemical  engineering in the spring of 2010, interned last fall at an ethanol plant near Wichita and now resides in East Asia. Max and Marissa are students at Southwest Baptist University. Max, who runs on the varsity cross country team at SBU, continues to live off campus. He still loves to run, but the two-a-day practices, the first of which begins at 5:30 a.m., infringe a bit more than he'd like on his time to write songs, play guitar and relax with friends. Marissa, in her first year at SBU, lives on campus and studies chemistry education and pre-dentistry. Her extracurricular activities include making new friends, making music with her brother Max, and playing saxophone in the SBU concert band.
